Jeter was adopted in June 2017 through Home for Spot pet adoptions. He was found on the streets of Pahrump and later DNA testing confirmed that his 4% wolf and coyote explained his wild behaviors. We were given the challenge that he needed a lot of patience to help with his trust issues and I could see the great potential in this gentle dog. He spent the first 3 years of his life under our bed and we couldn’t approach him without his getting up and giving us distance.
Fast forward to the dog we had to say goodbye to. He would wait by the back door for me to return from errands, he would prance with a huge grin on his face when I returned from vacation, and he would always be on his comfy bed beside me when I slept.
He was my alarm clock with his “snuffing” every morning at 6:13 am even if my husband had already let him out earlier. He wasn’t content until I was up and he was watching me get ready for their morning routines.
The obstacles he surmounted endured him even more to him. He had elbow hygromas (perhaps from scurrying under the bed on a tile floor for the first years he was with us). He patiently waited while I fastened his LEGGS protectors to him to wear until they healed.
He had a lot of fears and would bark in a panic when he stared at the ceiling and would see the reflection of cars shining through our front door windows. One dog therapist suggested he was psychic the way he stared at the ceiling!
Jeter had a therapy cat Willie who served as a pillow and comfort to Jeter. They were often seen snuggling up together. He also used his plush yellow duck for a pillow and would carry it around with him. He would occasionally unsuccessfully sneak it outside and partially bury it. I would have a good laugh when I saw a yellow furry object sticking up out of the dirt!
Jeter was diagnosed with Degenerative Myelopathy at LVVSC which is similar to Lou Gerig’s disease with no treatment available.
His back legs started collapsing beneath him and he was not pleased with my assistance with the harness. Instead he would make sure I was going outside with him and look at me to come help him when he had difficulty getting up. Arranging an in home euthanasia with NV Pet Hospice was the best gift I could give him.
Jeter’s place in my heart is secure through all the love we shared.
